Just a week ago, Ryan applied for a position as a bouncer at one of the local discos. He had studied karate, ninjitsu, aikido, judo, and gatka for two years; he was a body builder; he took daily vitamins, supplements, and minerals; he was into healthy eating and health foods; and he seemed like a natural for such a job. When Ryan got the announcement that he had been picked for the job, he was extremely pleased. Since this was an exclusive discotheque, nonetheless, he had to go through a two week instructional class. On the very first day of class, the lecturer started talking about people who drink too much and what the bartenders, bouncers, and barmaids should do when this condition arises. When the trainer started discussing alcohol poisoning, Ryan was delighted to find out that all of the new barmaids, bartenders, and bouncers had to learn about alcohol poisoning and what they should do when they spotted a person who was showing evidence of alcohol poisoning symptoms or exhibiting the signs of alcohol poisoning. More precisely, all the new barmaids, bartenders, and bouncers were instructed that nausea and vomiting were almost always one of the first signs of alcohol poisoning and that unconsciousness was perhaps the most highly identifiable alcohol overdose sign or symptom. The instructor went out of his way to underscore the fact that alcohol overdose symptoms were messages from the body and from the brain that the drinker had ingested more alcohol than his or her body can process. There were, however, more than a few other symptoms and signs of alcohol poisoning that all the new barmaids, bartenders, and bouncers were taught to identify. For instance, the students in the class were made aware that drinkers with alcohol poisoning exhibit confusion, exhibit poor reflex responses, often have seizures, and they are difficult to awaken. Moreover, the class members learned that many people who experience alcohol poisoning also exhibit little response from painful stimuli, for instance from pinching; slow, shallow or irregular breathing; blue tinged or pale skin; and slurred speech. To show the impact that binge drinking has on alcohol poisoning, the lecturer explained to the class members that a person who gets drunk once or twice per year is, by definition, involving himself or herself in abusive drinking. Such a person, however, is most likely not an alcohol dependent person, but is most likely engaging in binge drinking. As articulated by the instructor, engaging in binge drinking even once, unfortunately, can lead to an alcohol overdose that in extreme instances can be lethal. The lecturer then explained to the class that the correct response for alcohol poisoning is the following: if it is suspected that a drinker is suffering from an alcohol overdose, call 911 and ask for immediate medical assistance, even if the drinker is underage. By following this plan of action, the drinker will get the prompt alcohol poisoning treatment he or she needs. After learning about alcohol poisoning and particularly about the symptoms and signs of alcohol poisoning, it may be pointed out, Ryan realized that he had discovered some crucial information that might save a person's life down the road. Indeed, Ryan learned that knowledge of the common alcohol poisoning symptoms and signs and knowing how to appropriately and quickly react to such symptoms and signs (by promptly calling 911 and asking for emergency medical assistance) can help a drinker avoid a fatal alcohol overdose.
