When Lois was in high school, she had obtained a reputation as a studious person who rarely, if ever, had fun drinking with her pals. She seemed driven to excel academically so that she would be able to find a career that she not only enjoyed but one that also gave her a degree of security from a financial position. After Lois graduated from high school, she applied to and was accepted into a leading program in sociology. Her rationale for this decision was that this subject would be a good foundation for law school and would not be comparable to the majority of law school applicants who decide to take political science as their undergraduate major. Lois was the type of person who worked thoroughly to complete what she started and then would take a breather when she could. As it turns out, however, the vast majority of the things she did between school sessions or during summer breaks did not involve drinking. Evidently, Lois was anything but a party-person. Now that her final exams for her second year in law school were done and realizing that she had done extremely well on her exams, however, she wanted to let her hair down and have some fun. So Lois and a few of her friends from the university went to a local club where they had a few beers. As the evening proceeded, Lois and her friends continued to drink. In truth, she was having such a wonderful time that she didn't want the night to end. After drinking around forty-five minutes when Lois started to speak in a confused manner, slur her words, and then become unconscious, nevertheless, her buddies immediately knew that they needed to call that they needed to call 911 and ask for medical assistance because they thought that Lois was exhibiting alcohol poisoning symptoms. Lois was attentive to the fact that she came close to losing her life due to an alcohol overdose and, consequently, was thankful to be alive. At the same time, however, she was somewhat depressed knowing that she had almost died the previous night. Her parents were aware how intensely she studied at the university and how little she let herself experience a social life. Nevertheless, they also knew that Lois needed to steer clear of irresponsible drinking. Consequently, they recommended that in the future, whenever a drinking opportunity presents itself, that she always drink responsibly. Lois agreed and swore to her parents and to her friends that she would never again drink in an abusive manner. In Lois's own words, "I never pondered the fact that I would become one of the alcohol poisoning statistics in the local city newspaper. I now know that excessive and hazardous drinking is not for me. I guarantee that this will never happen again." Fortunately, Lois was not only "book smart" but she also possessed. Stated more explicitly, she rapidly understood that she had made an error and decided that she would never make the same error again. In fact, she now knew that she had involved herself in "binge drinking" and that even one instance of this form of careless and irresponsible drinking can result in death.
