Sharon had been involved in hazardous drinking behavior since her junior year in college. Now, five years later, she drank more than ever. One Friday night when she was feeling a bit run down, Sharon decided to stay home, loosen up, and watch TV. While trying to find a special program to watch that would grab hold of her attention, she at once got interested in a program about young adult and adolescent drinking difficulties. The speaker talked about the difference between alcoholism and alcohol abuse and then discussed the topic of alcoholic symptoms and alcoholic behavior. When the commenter discussed a person's symptoms of withdrawal and some of the more familiar alcoholic signs and symptoms that alcohol addicted people reveal, Sharon got quite disturbed because it virtually seemed as if the commenter was talking directly to her. After watching the TV special, Sharon promised herself that she would telephone her physician the next business day and schedule an appointment to discuss her abusive and careless drinking. When the following morning arrived, true to her word, Sharon called her doctor and made an appointment. While she was waiting for the day of her appointment to arrive, she went on the Internet and did a search for alcoholism symptoms. Especially noteworthy were the following signs or symptoms: making excuses to drink at virtually every opportunity, sleep problems, serious relationship and work-related problems, sneaking extra drinks before social events, and increasing irritability. Simply stated, due to the fact that Sharon exhibited all of these symptoms she went further in her online search and found several websites and blogs that highlighted various alcohol addiction symptoms and warning signs. One of the symptoms that really captured her attention was the following: "Do you usually drink after promising yourself that you won't?" Another alcoholic symptom that captured her curiosity was the following: "Have people at work gotten on your nerves by disapproving of your abusive and excessive drinking?" A third alcoholism symptom was the following: "Do you need a drink when you first awaken in the morning?" The final alcoholic warning symptom that made her feel fairly on edge about her hazardous and excessive drinking was the following: "Has your ambition diminished since you started drinking on a more regular basis?" When Sharon read this sign she openly realized that drinking had become a severe difficulty in her life because of her diminished energy level and also because she quit pursuing her dreams and her passions. After reflecting on all of these unhealthy alcohol dependency signs and symptoms, Sharon at first felt sad. Then something exhilarating came about. She realized that she was going to see her health care provider about her hazardous and excessive drinking and she also reflected on the fact that that she would discuss her alcohol dependency warning signs and symptoms. In truth, for the first time in quite a few months, Sharon sincerely felt a sense of hopefulness because she was addressing her hazardous and excessive drinking and was finally ready to make the needed alterations so that she could recover the life that was drifting away.
