Cindy was a forty-seven-year-old accounts payable manager who realized that she had a drinking problem. For example, within the past month she has experienced the need to have two or three drinks before going to work, four weeks ago she tested positive for a saliva alcohol test at her place of employment, three weeks ago she got arrested for a DWI, and lastly, for the past six months she has started to fail to remember what she does and says when she drinks with her pals. Not unlike other individuals, Cindy's alcohol involvement began little by little and continued at this speed for quite a long period of time due to the fact that every now and then she engaged in casual social drinking. In point of fact, for around nine months, every time she went out with her buddies to drink, she made sure to drink responsibly. Something about her drinking circumstances, nonetheless, seemed to thoroughly change when she divorced her husband. Cindy got extremely despondent about the breakup with her husband, and as a way to refrain from her preoccupation with her depressing emotions she came to a decision that she would start palling around more frequently with some of her friends who love to party. It didn't take too long, nonetheless, before her drinking increased to a significant extent the more habitually she went to and drank at family get-togethers, dinner dates, sporting events, happy hours, and private parties with her pals. In short, she was drinking and having a ton of fun just like everyone else in her group of buddies without much reflection about the alcohol short term effects and especially about the alcohol long term effects she has been manifesting. Yet somewhere in the recesses of her brain she knew about the adverse alcohol effects on the body and on the brain and that she most probably needed alcohol counseling but steered clear of the thought as much as possible. One late afternoon during her twelve month physical exam, her healthcare practitioner asked her if she drank alcohol. Not wanting to lie to her healthcare professional, Cindy admitted that she routinely drinks more than she should. In point of fact, she stated that she commonly drinks in a hazardous and irresponsible manner. Then Cindy told her healthcare practitioner about her depression. More plainly, she mentioned that wrecked relationships frequently initiated a discouraging chain of events typified by increased drinking which further led to more disheartening feelings that, in turn, led to even more drinking. And this is exactly what took place when her husband and she got divorced five years ago. Cindy's healthcare professional then said the following: "I am not trying to make a sudden diagnosis, but with your medical situation we may be confronting two separate issues. As a consequence, I think we probably should make an appointment for you to get an alcohol addiction and alcohol abuse appraisal from my partner, Dr. Gardner, who is a chemical dependency and substance abuse specialist." "Whether your drinking circumstance is more correlated with alcohol abuse or alcoholism is not clear at this time, but I feel that further exploration is defensible. Then I feel we need to schedule an appointment for you to get a psychological exam from another one of my partners, Dr. Patterson, who is a psychologist." "I need to get some additional information about your sadness and see how much your depression and drinking are intertwined." Cindy showed her agreement with her doctor's treatment approach and thanked him for his help.
