Ralph started drinking excessively when he was in the seventh grade. Fortunately for him, even though he drank hazardously and abusively when he was a teen and a young adult, when he got beyond the age of twenty-five he almost always drank in moderation. After he completed his education he eventually got a job at a local food processing plant where he worked his way up from stock person, to office assistant, to purchasing assistant, to purchasing agent. Unlike his other positions, as the purchasing agent he over and over again took potential vendors and existing vendors to lunch and to a variety of sporting events. Though it was not written in concrete, meeting with existing vendors and potential vendors repeatedly involved situations in which alcohol was present. In actual fact, over the past year, Ralph had started to extensively increase his work related and his social drinking. This has resulted in quite a quandary. Namely, the more successful he became as a purchasing agent, the more heavily he began to drink. In fact, it did not take very long before Ralph's hazardous drinking started to affect the money in his savings account, his work efficiency, his health, his relationships, and his mental health. At one point, Ralph, in fact, began to get nervous about his abusive and irresponsible drinking and wondered whether his alcohol related issues were alcoholism signs. To make things worse, his increasing bouts of depression also made him question if he was becoming an alcohol dependent person. In short, Ralph clearly needed to learn more about the facts about alcohol abuse and the signs of alcoholism. So Ralph used his problem solving skills, called his family doctor, and made an appointment for a physical examination. The next week when he saw his doctor, Ralph regrettably discovered that he was addicted to alcohol. His health care practitioner told Ralph that he needed to get alcohol detoxification and alcohol rehabilitation for his alcohol addiction and that he also needed to get a medical assessment regarding his depression. In short, Ralph needed treatment for his alcoholism and depression. His doctor suggested to Ralph that he request a 45 day leave of absence from work and get enrolled in a quality residential alcohol treatment facility where his depression could also be appraised and treated. This is specifically what Ralph did. The positive news is that after his treatment for alcoholism and for depression, he felt like a new person. Indeed, now that he was sober he almost never got depressed and he now knew how to better manage his relationships, his finances, his health, and his job. Obviously, the biggest test Ralph came across was at work. To be more specific, he still took his existing vendors and potential vendors to lunch and to various sporting events, but after his alcohol treatment he managed to refrain from drinking while entertaining his clients. Interestingly, Ralph also found out that none of his potential vendors or his existing vendors thought any less of him because of his non-alcoholic lifestyle. Alternatively, he found out that his existing vendors and potential vendors respected him for maintaining his convictions. After Ralph went through alcohol rehab he found out that if he said "no" to drinking, all of the other important parts of his life would be upgraded. Every so often, it can be emphasized, Ralph missed drinking, but the better finances, health, relationships, and the better work performance he experienced more than made up for his craving for alcohol.
