CPSC Proclaims Alert For Parents About Sling Infant Carriers

As many of you have most likely heard, the CPSC has issued a notification to caregivers and how they handle their newborns in their baby sling. |A little over a week ago, the CPSC published a warning for parents to use care while handling their newborns in baby slings. The company warned parents to "be cautious when using infant slings for babies younger than four months of age." It also urged parents of preemies, twins, babies in fragile health and those of low weights to use additional care and take up with their pediatricians about using slings. "We know of too many deaths in these slings and we now know the hazard scenarios for very small babies," said CPSC chair Inez Tenenbaum. The CPSC is investigating at least 14 fatalities over the past 20 years affiliated with sling-style baby carriers, including 3 fatalities in 2009. 12 of the deaths involved children younger than four months of age. Many of the babies who died in slings were either a low birth weight twin, were born prematurely, or had breathing issues. Slings can pose 2 distinct types of suffocation hazards to babies. In the first few months of life, infants have difficulty controlling their heads because of their weak neck muscles. The baby sling carrier material is known to hinder the baby's airways, ultimately suffocating the child within a couple of minutes. Additionally, when a sling keeps an infant in a curled position bending the chin toward the chest, the airways can be restricted, limiting the oxygen supply. Children have been known to suffocate this way as they are not able to cry for help. The CPSC has recommended that parents and caregivers make certain the infant's face is never covered and can be seen at all times by the sling's wearer.
