Exactly why dog lovers have this preconceived idea that small breed pups are more difficult to train than medium sized or large breed puppies, I will never be able to understand. Housebreaking a puppy, despite its size should never be a problem. Small dog training, is not different from training a puppy of any other sized breed. Although training any puppy will have its peculiarities, according to its breed, almost all other aspects remain identical, and the approach to training the dog should remain the same, not withstanding its size. However, I will make an exception here, and accept that small dog training may create problems in two arenas, (1) Aggression and (2) Puppy crate training. However, this is not because the fact that it is a small breed dog, but 10 times out of 10, because of the owner. If a tiny breed dog is aggressive and is difficult to train, or if a small breed dog cannot be potty trained or poses challenges in being potty trained, it is the owner who has ignorantly contributed to this situation. Let us look at how and why. Aggression. Smaller dogs are loved because they are cute, they are like toy characters. Owners enjoy having their puppy sit on their laps. This indulgence is where the problem starts. The innate aggressive nature of the canine, is to claim ownership over its space, its food, even its master; all puppies want to be the alpha dog. It is the ruthless streak in the canine animal that makes it to get on to the lap of its master, above all when there are plenty of people seated in the room. This is a blatant act of ruthlessness. Instead of admonishing the dog, every owner with the exception of no one, would cuddle the dog, even though it jumped on to their lap unbeckoned, fostering the aggressive streak in the animal. In this way the owner has accepted the pooch's inherent need to be the alpha dog. Growling and getting angry at a a bigger size dog is another obvious act of aggression. To the owner, and even the people nearby, this is looked on as cute, mainly because one dog is little while the other is bigger. Most owners praise the dog instead of admonishing it, when it exhibits this aggression against a larger dog. These are but examples as to why small size breed dogs are aggressive, and it s not because small dog training is problematic. Bathroom Training Owners are inclined to lug their small dogs around where ever they are, even at home and that makes it very difficult to bathroom train them It is as a reflex action that the owners of small breed dogs to carry the animal to the area where the pup should do its dirty business and then lug it back into the house. It is this habit of carrying the pup to its appointed toilet area that is the origin of all problems. In addition, as the pup is as a general rule carried around so often it has no way of it indicating to or notifying the owner that it has to go the toilet. Small dog training starts with treating the dog as any other large sized dog. They have to be moved to their potty area on a leash. If owners avoid carrying their miniature breed dogs they would have no obstacles in training them. Dog crate training, is the best part of pup training, and so it should be, even in Small Dog Training. Dog Kennel Training Dog Kennel Training, most often described as Crate Training, is the best way to get started with house breaking the new puppy you have just brought home. 'Kennel' may be referred to as 'Crate' and 'Kennel Training' may be referred to as 'Crate Training' through out this article.
