When I was just a little boy I can tenderly hark back to sitting on an antique barber chair at the community barber shop and observing my dad receiving a haircut and shave. Most men kept their hair short as that was the manner back then. After the hair cut was a shave. This was not a shave as we see today, with foam from a can and a plastic disposable razor. Instead, the lather was put on with a badger brush and a straight blade razor was used. It appears terrifying, but it is the cleanest shave you can ever obtain. After the shave was the hot towel that always felt so good. The men would principally argue about baseball or politics, though the matter of women would come up often. It was a time to be at ease and get to know each of us a little better. Now, when you get a haircut the chatting is kept to a minimum and you commonly attempt to get out as soon as you can. As I stroll by the local barber shop and make out the sign indicating barber chairs for sale, I question why this practice has mostly disappeared from our civilization.
