Youth Alcohol Abuse, The Relationship Between Coping Skills And Hazardous Drinking, And The Necessity For Coping Skills Education
Recent teenage alcohol abuse statistics demonstrate the fact that alcohol abuse among teenagers is increasing in the United States. What are some of the reasons for this? Many alcohol addiction experts believe that beer, wine, and liquor advertisements created by the media are a fundamental reason for the proliferation of teen alcohol abuse.

Other alcohol abuse professionals argue that the increase in teen alcohol abuse is due to the toleration and accessibility of alcohol. Still other alcohol addiction consultants state that many of our teens involve themselves in alcohol abuse due to the increased tension that they experience.

From a slightly different outlook, because both parents in many families work, the lack of parental guidance surely has to play an essential part in the increase in adolescent alcohol abuse. And as a final point, a variety of alcohol abuse authorities argue that the increase in adolescent alcohol abuse is due, at least partially, to our permissive society.

One component of adolescent alcohol abuse that looks like it is lacking in the alcoholism research findings, on the other hand, is the deficiency of educational programs that teach students how to improve upon their coping skills so that their unhealthy and abusive drinking behavior is notably reduced or done away with. More to the point, science has made obvious the fact that there is an indirect correlation between poor coping skills and alcohol abuse.

In effect, this means that the worse the coping skills, the greater the incidence of alcohol abuse. To the extent that this is a valid argument, why isn't coping skills education a key part of the academic prospectus in all of our junior high schools, elementary schools, and high schools?

Let us construct a scenario for illustrative purposes. Let us imagine a society in which all people are taught how to develop high-quality coping skills all the way from kindergarten up to and including the twelfth grade. In such a society, when life gets challenging, people who are "coping skills experts" will be able to respond in a more healthy and more productive manner, contrary to others who are unsuccessful in their attempts to implement their coping skills.

More to the point, students who display sound coping skills will be more able to think clearly and exhibit excellent decision making as opposed to students who, because they do not possess quality coping skills, gravitate to the "quick fix" of hazardous and excessive drinking.

What would happen in the above "ideal" society, moreover, if students not only got top shelf coping skills education but also received an exclusive education that stressed the short term and long term injurious consequences associated with drug abuse and alcohol abuse? Emphasizing these types of teenage alcohol and drug abuse facts, along with more highly developed coping skills education, it is asserted, would help teens stay away from the apparent attraction with teenage drinking and, as a result, would notably lessen the harmful drinking behavior exhibited by teens in our country.

There are unquestionably many defensible reasons why so many of our teenagers abuse alcohol. Such a thorny subject demands an extensive and relevant response by our students, educators, politicians, and parents so that our adolescents can learn how to cope with life's problems in a more fruitful and responsible way instead of gravitating to hazardous and excessive drinking to solve their problems.
